yes HYPE finally gets a new happy home – hypeframework.org

When I constantly pestered Branden Hall to help me with this idea I had… I had an assumption of what I thought HYPE would be… simply a place for Joshua Davis to port 11 years of ideas into. I saw the relationship as Mr. Hall infesting my brain with a structure that I’d start with… Branden goes away, and does what he does, and I’d be 100% invested with taking this seed knowledge planted by Branden and discovering what happens next. Which is why the project was parked at http://hype.joshuadavis.com

Well that’s not what happened.

HYPE became something bigger than just 1 person. HYPE is a partnership between Branden Hall and myself. If the both of us we’re going to be 100% committed to the future and maintenance of HYPE, then HYPE needed to be parked on its own domain so that people understand that this project is co-founded and co-maintained by the both of us.

To add to HYPE’s expansion we have a great community of people working on HYPE as well… to name a few, Dr. Woohoo, Andy McDonald, Si Robertson, Jesse Freeman, and many others.

So welcome to HYPE’s new happy home… we hope you enjoy the URL change… please update your bookmarks.

Yeah, neither of us really had any idea where this would go!

I’ve had in my head, for quite a few years now, an idea for a library of code that made being creative with ActionScript easier. At first, I tried to implement it with a visual programming concept – and it just never got off the ground. When you and I started working on that music visualizer project I already had small bit of code, but it wasn’t really that much yet. I had started calling it HYPE because if it didn’t work out I could just say “oh – it was just hype…”.

Through the process of building that music visualizer you and I both just kept defining more and more of the projects we had living in our heads and most importantly, we were combining them. I started seeing patterns in the way your old code worked and started implementing those patterns into HYPE. You would then immediately see NEW ways of using these patterns and suddenly we had dozens and dozens of incredible examples.

In many ways I don’t think either of us knew what we were building until it was built. It took both of us having our own visions to create something that is, I’m really happy to say, much greater than either of use ever envisioned!

word to that. Branden you’re a great friend and collaborator… don’t make me get emotional man.

Just saying the feeling is mutual wouldn’t properly express the deep respect I have for your creativity, skill, and insane work ethic. Here’s to many more years of collaboration!

I think this is just magic, not only the HYPE framework but also the fire you guys have for producing such a tool. It has definitely changed a lot of things, for a lot of people.

FIY: hype@hypeframework.org is not working.

And this question:
With HYPE I can now print and save a certain state of an animation as a drawing. In Flash I can also export the animation as a movie.
But can both things be done simultaneously? Imagine a drawing saved and the movie exported from the exactly the same drawing.
Now I have to choose between a drawing or a movie: save as png during runtime or export to movie from within flash.
i suppose I could use a screen capture software; But could it be done simultaneously only with flash?

We’re working on exactly this feature for a future version. So no, it’s not possible right now, but will be possible in the future.

hype email above is not working…

I am, glad to see that hype is gathering momentum so quickly.

I have been watching the development of this project with interest for a
while. I came across hype a while researching why so many of my advanced
visual design students were jumping ship from AS3 (which is taught as
part of our curriculum) to Processing as they became more advanced
programmers.

Do you have any documents or posts about that talk about the conceptual
underpinnings of Hype? (The old website had a bit of this). I am in the
very early stages of putting together an essay about “sketch-ability”
and “play” in the design and prototyping process (in the context of
code) and would love to get some further insight into the driving forces
behind the work you are doing…

Many many thanks,

Hi all. I know that many people don’t like Flash events structure, but I do. And I don’t like anonimous function call indeed. Could be nice to have flash event like in Hype.
In any case I love you both guys and thanks for this great pice of library.
Roberto.
